Recent events - from the Ukraine war's price shocks to cyber-attacks on M&S and Co-op - have highlighted the fragility of the UK's dependence on globalised, just-in-time food networks. The study, published in Sustain, shows how shocks like sudden price hikes or shortages can cascade through the system, hitting low-income households hardest and potentially fuelling social unrest, food fraud, and even riots. A central message of the report is that strengthening local food production is critical to national resilience. Shorter, more localised supply chains are far less vulnerable to international disruptions, and communities with access to locally grown food are better placed to weather global crises. Researchers recommend diversifying food supply chains, boosting domestic agricultural capacity, and encouraging diets built around locally produced food.
